500 Nepali amputees to get prosthetic limbs

KATHMANDU, Jan 14: India's BMVSS Jaipur Foot is providing 500 prosthetic limbs to Nepali amputees.

Of the total prosthetic limbs, 51 will be distributed from Kathmandu-based Norvic International Hospital whereas the remaining prosthetic limbs will be distributed at Sahaj Hospital in Nawalpur.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population Upendra Yadav on Sunday inaugurated the artificial limb fitting camp by lighting the flame and distributed free prosthetic limbs to several beneficiaries at Norvic International Hospital, Thapathali.

Norvic had started distribution of the prosthetic limbs provided by the Indian manufacturer from Friday and will continue until Monday. Amputees can get the service from Nawalpur-based hospital from January 17. The distribution of artificial limbs will continue for 45 days since its starting.

According to the hospital source, the amputees will be provided the prosthetic limbs on first-come, first-served basis.

Along with DPM Yadav, chairman of Chaudhary Group Binod Chaudhary, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri, founder of BMVSS Dr DR Mehta and director of BMVSS Satis Mehta handed over the prosthetic limbs made by Jaipur Foot to several amputees. They also visited the Jaipur Foot Camp and temporary workshop at Norvic and met with the BMVSS technical team and persons with disability who had come to get the artificial limbs.

After distributing the limbs in Kathmandu, the team will move to Sahaj Hospital.

Speaking at the program, DPM Yadav said disabled people will greatly benefit from the scheme.

The Indian ambassador to Nepal said that around 1.7 million people have benefited from this campaign around world.

“This is a non-medical solution for a medical problem and it is simple and easy to use and maintain,” added Puri.

BMVSS Jaipur Foot is arguably the world's largest organization for serving persons with disability and all its services are given free of cost. This organisation serves around 80,000 people in a year.

BMVSS said it has organized 73 international camps in 30 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, bringing mobility to over 26,000 persons with disability. The present camp in Nepal is the 73rd camp of BMVSS.
