Govt launches toll-free number 1149 for disaster emergencies

KATHMANDU, June 5: The government has launched a toll-free number, 1149, to facilitate the public in providing information about disaster emergencies. This service is operational round the clock.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Rabi Lamichhane, announced this initiative during a federal parliament meeting today. 

In the meeting, the Minister said the government is more concerned about the safety of citizens from potential monsoon hazards when the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has predicted above-average rainfall during this monsoon.

According to him, the mobilization of government and non-government bodies has been prioritized in disaster preparedness and response efforts. 

As he said, a specific timeline, spanning from June 1 to October 5, has been identified for potential monsoon-related risks this year. To effectively manage response efforts, a command post coordinated by a joint secretary at the Disaster and Conflict Management Division has been set up. 

Stating that it has been estimated that 1.8 million citizens and 83,000 households will be directly affected by monsoon this year, the Home Minister said the command post will function as a one-stop service center.  

According to him, 10,847 Nepali Army personnel, 9,924 Armed Police Force personnel, and 10,585 Nepal Police personnel are on standby to undertake response efforts during monsoon emergencies. These numbers will be increased if necessary, he said.  

The government has also mobilized a five-member squad in various 10 districts to launch public awareness initiatives against the risk of monsoon hazards. 

Similarly, helicopters from the Nepali Army are on standby in Kathmandu and Surkhet for emergency purposes, with the urge for private helicopter companies to cooperate when necessary.

The Deputy Prime Minister also said that the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund, along with provincial and local authorities, currently holds a total of Rs 6.82 billion. He expressed confidence that the effective mobilization of this fund will enrich the effectiveness of rescue efforts.
