Govt withdraws new medical college affiliations

KATHMANDU, June 2: The government has decided to withdraw its earlier decision to grant affiliation to new medical colleges. 

A cabinet meeting held on Friday decided to withdraw its decision to grant affiliation to three new medical colleges including Jhapa-based B&C College after Health Minister Gagan Thapa objected to the decision.
 
Several Nepali Congress ministers had also joined Thapa in protesting the decision taken by the cabinet on Wednesday.

The cabinet move to revoke the decision comes in the wake of Dr Govinda KC preparing to launch his 11th fast-onto-death, demanding implementation of the agreement reached between him and the government. Among other things, the government had agreed not to give affiliation to new medical colleges until specific criteria are developed.

Also, the cabinet meeting decided to deploy government staffers in all municipalities and rural municipalities.

The meeting decided to deploy officer level staffers in each rural municipality and under-secretary in each municipality as executive officer.

“As local units got their political representatives and the government also allocated budget for the development purposes, the cabinet decided to fill the vacant posts in all municipalities and rural municipalities,” said Mohan Krishna Sapkota, secretary at the Ministry of General Administration (MoGA).

According to him, the ministry had earlier submitted a proposal to the cabinet to deploy government staffers at local levels. The proposal includes deploying civil engineers, computer operators and other staffers at the local units to carry out day-to-day work.

He also said that the decision has authorized a District Administration Officer (DAO)-led committee in each municipalities and rural municipalities to fill the vacancies. “If DAO-led committee could not fill the post, then MoGA will work to fill the vacancies,” he added.
