Govt sends Rs 50 million to earthquake victims in Jajarkot and West Rukum

KATHMANDU, Dec 1: The government has sent Rs 50 million for relief to Jajarkot and Rukum West, where thousands of houses were destroyed or damaged due to the earthquake that occurred on November 3.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha said that the government has sent Rs 50 million to two districts to provide relief to the victims through the District Disaster Management Fund in the meeting held on Thursday of the National Concern and Coordination Committee under the National Assembly.

According to the policy of immediately providing Rs 50,000 to the families whose houses were destroyed, Rs 50 million has been sent to Jajarkot and Rukum West. The government is ready to provide additional funds, if necessary, senior government officials said.

Minister Shrestha said that the affected people can get relief money on the recommendation of the ward. The government has already announced that the families who lost their relatives in the earthquake will be given a subsidy of Rs 2,00,000. The government has also arranged free treatment for those injured in the earthquake.

The parliamentary committee has said that more relief will be given to the families of the earthquake victims who died due to cold. Home Minister Shrestha said that the government has not yet decided on this.

Chairperson of the committee, Dilkumari Rawal Thapa, said that there was no manpower to build temporary housing, and the earthquake victims were dying of cold, and she drew the attention of the Home Minister to the need to help build temporary housing by deploying army and police teams.

According to Dinesh Bhattarai, secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, a total of 9,794 houses in Jajarkot have been completely damaged and 24,000 houses have been partially damaged. Similarly, in Rukum West, 16,570 houses have been partially damaged and 9,961 houses have been completely damaged.

In Rukum West, 16 public buildings were completely destroyed and 21 partially destroyed. According to data, 154 people died in Jajarkot and Rukum West due to the 6.4 Richter scale earthquake. Many people were also injured. Although seven districts were affected by the earthquake, Jajarkot and Rukum West are among the vulnerable ones.
