Medical students demand NMC reduce internship duration

KATHMANDU, Oct 29: At a time when five-year records of Nepal Medical Council (NMC) reveals that a majority of medical students studying abroad fail the license test conducted by the NMC, the medical students studying in Bangladesh have demanded that the internship period be slashed from one year to six months.

The medical students studying abroad are required to do one-year internship after completing their medical courses, according to the NMC. A large number of medical students who studied abroad failed the licensing exams. Passing the NMC test is mandatory for doctors to practice medicine in Nepal.

However, issuing a statement, Nepali Medical Students Association (NMSA), Bangladesh demanded that the NMC slash the internship period by six months. “If the medical students studying in Nepal can appear in the license test after six months of internship, why are we forced to do one-year internship while we study for a total of six years and the medical students in Nepal study only 5.5 years?” the statement said.

The NMSA warned the NMC of staging protests if their demand is not addressed. They urge the students, guardians, journalists and all justice lovers to support their ‘cause’.
