UDAYAPUR, Sept 8: In Udayapur, one individual succumbed to the scrub typhus infection, a disease that has seen a surge in cases over recent days. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Pati Sada from Triyuga Municipality-9, passed away due to complications arising from scrub typhus.
Sada was admitted to the Udayapur District Hospital's emergency room on Thursday, and tragically, he passed away during the night. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Gyanendra Kumar disclosed that Sada, initially admitted as a critically ill patient, was diagnosed with scrub typhus infection and, despite medical intervention, could not be saved. Unfortunately, Sada's condition had deteriorated significantly before seeking medical attention.
Dr Rahul Rauniyar, a general physician at the hospital, revealed that in addition to scrub typhus, Sada had also developed kidney and urinary tract infections. While the primary cause of death was scrub typhus, concurrent kidney failure and urinary infections were observed. Dr Rauniyar emphasized that despite the prompt medical response, Sada's condition was already grave when he arrived at the hospital.
The Udayapur Hospital has noted a rapid increase in scrub typhus cases, with 3-4 patients being diagnosed daily. Currently, around a dozen patients are receiving treatment for scrub typhus after being admitted. Dr Rauniyar stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for anyone experiencing symptoms like headaches, fever, limb and body aches, as delayed treatment can pose a significant risk.
Dr Rauniyar explained, "Although the initial symptoms of scrub typhus may resemble those of a common fever, it is a severe disease that can affect various organs, including the brain, heart, and kidneys." He emphasized the need for immediate treatment as scrub typhus can be managed effectively if diagnosed and treated promptly.
Contrary to the danger posed by negligence, scrub typhus can often be cured within three to five days when addressed promptly. Dr Rauniyar stated, "Many individuals afflicted with this infection have recovered and returned home within three to five days." The hospital has successfully treated and discharged approximately 50-60 patients thus far.
Chhabitra Rai, a staff nurse at the hospital, reported that scrub typhus infections, which first emerged in mid-July, have been steadily increasing. She noted that this infection has been identified in a significant number of patients seeking treatment at the hospital since July. To date, over five dozen patients have recovered and been discharged, while approximately a dozen continue to receive treatment in the ward under Rai's care.
