Unidentified bodies will be sent to Kathmandu on Tuesday

KATHMANDU, Jan 16: Government authorities have decided to send the unidentified bodies of those who were killed in the plane crash of Yeti Airlines to Kathmandu for DNA testing. A helicopter has arrived in Pokhara from Kathmandu to take the dead bodies.

However, due to the time constraints on Monday, the bodies will be sent to Kathmandu only on Tuesday, said Bharat Khatri, director of Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences.

Post-mortem of the bodies that have been identified has been completed in Pokhara while preparations are being made to hand them over to their relatives. Director Khatri, however, said that it is not possible to hand over the bodies on Monday.

According to the hospital, the work of classifying the bodies by forensic experts led by a team of doctors from the Forensic Department of the Kathmandu-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital has been completed with the help of doctors from Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences and other educational institutions.

Only 26 of the 69 bodies recovered from the crash site have been identified so far. The post-mortem of the bodies, which have been identified, was done in Pokhara.

Although some of the dead bodies have been identified on the basis of identity cards, further identification is needed, so they should be taken to Kathmandu for DNA testing, according to the Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences.
