TIA upgrades CCTV footage storage capacity to 61 days

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) administration has clarified that the storage capacity of the CCTV cameras installed at the TIA has been increased to 61 days. This comes in response to previous reports about the absence of CCTV footage connected to the airport for 21 days.

The administration acknowledged that 500 CCTV cameras were installed inside the airport, and previously, some of them had a storage capacity of only 21 days. However, they have now extended the storage capacity to 61 days.

TIA General Manager Pratap Babu Tiwari said that the earlier storage capacity was a maximum of 29 days. To achieve the increased storage, 36 hard disks with a capacity of 16 TB each have been installed. The decision to extend the storage duration was made in a stakeholder meeting held on October 14, 2023.

Tiwari mentioned that the airport had requested a budget to increase the storage capacity for three months in the fiscal year 2021/22. However, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal did not allocate the budget, citing the Covid-19 pandemic.

While the airport administration has installed the CCTV cameras inside the airport, the Nepal Police is responsible for the operation and surveillance work. Tiwari added that the TIA administration has provided the information requested by the Department of Customs (DoC) as much as possible.

Previously, the DoC had stated that it had not received footage older than 21 days. Tiwari emphasized that over 170 agencies are operating on the airport premises.
