Campaign launched to encourage people to wear masks while traveling in public transport

KATHMANDU, Jan 20: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has launched a civic awareness campaign in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keeping in view of the COVID-19 pandemic that is wreaking havoc across the country, the MTPD, Ramshahpath has started a citizen awareness campaign from the Sundhara area in Kathmandu asking ordinary public to wear masks to avoid COVID-19 infection. 

The MTPD has also affixed leaflets and pamphlets in public vehicles and other places appealing to ordinary public to wear masks while traveling on the vehicles. Drivers, conductors and passengers were requested to wear masks while in the public space and vehicle.

Chief of the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Umesh Raj Joshi said that the campaign was launched to make the ordinary public aware of the growing menace of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the leaflets and pamphlets affixed on the vehicles would also make the citizens aware that they should wear masks.

SSP Joshi said, "It is a matter of creating awareness. Now the rate of COVID-19 infection is growing. People already know this. But if they are not told, they will not be careful enough. The importance of the mask will be highlighted during our campaign. It is simply an attempt to raise awareness among people. "

General Secretary of the Federation of Nepali National Transport Entrepreneurs (FNNTE) Saroj Sitaula said that an awareness campaign has been launched for the people who go out of their home without wearing masks. He said that the traffic police and the FNTTE, employees and trade unions have asked vehicle drivers to wear masks to avoid COVID-19 infection. He also said that this campaign will be taken to all across the country.

General Secretary Sitaula said, "Understanding the situation of yesterday, the Traffic Police Division, FNNTE and trade unions have launched this campaign. Let the message given from Kathmandu go all over the country. The mask is for our safety. Everyone should wear it.”

Secretary General Sitaula also said that action would be taken against the passengers, drivers and conductors if they were found not wearing masks.
