Two infants, a mother die at BPKIHS within week

DHARAN, Nov 25: Less than a week after the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at  BP Koirala Institute of Health  Sciences (BPKIHS) Dharan, another infant lost its life there on Wednesday.

Manju Rai, 48,  of Dharan-11 was admitted to  BPKIHS for childbirth. Unfortunately, the child died in the womb. Earlier, on Sunday, Manisha Limbu, 28,  of Sangurigadhi Rural Municipality-3 in Dhankuta, died with her child still in the womb. 

Limbu's family has accused the hospital of ignoring their request to take her to labor ward on time. On Tuesday, the hospital authorities and the deceased woman's family signed an agreement under which her husband and  daughter will receive free treatment for life.

 That case was still making the rounds when another woman lost her unborn child. Manju Rai's husband Bikram said his wife had succeeded in becoming pregnant after 17 years.  "Unable to tolerate the extreme pain of labor, my wife asked  them to do a C-section but they told her to wait  half an hour," said Bikram. "I didn't just lose my child because of that but my wife has ended up in the Intensive Care Unit(ICU)," he added.

The dead unborn  was later removed  surgically and Manju was admitted to the gynecology ward on November 20. Her maternal Uncle Thir Kumar Rai said, "My niece went into labor  at around 6:30 on Wednesday. The child could have been saved if the doctors had conducted an operation right then."  

The Rai family  has decided to file a complaint against the hospital authorities.  This isn't the first time patients have complained about  negligence by doctors or nurses at BPKIHS." Most nurses are busy with their mobile phones  when they  should be taking care of the patients," laments Bikram.

 Assistant Director of BPKIHS Dr Bikash Sah stated that Manju Rai and her husband had requested  normal delivery because of which they had to wait for a while and this led to a uterus burst and the  death of the unborn. "The child died  of birth complications not because of any negligence," claimed Dr Sah. He further said that the incident must be investigated rather than just blaming the hospital.
