KATHMANDU, Jan 21: A report titled the Status of Media Freedom in Nepal, which was unveiled in the capital on Sunday, has demanded amendments to the provisions in the new Criminal Code that curtail media freedom.

The report prepared by the Media Action Nepal (MAN), a media rights body, expresses grave concerns over a number of clauses in the new law saying they seriously undermine or weaken press freedom.

Earlier, the government had formed a task force to suggest recommendations for amending the contentious provisions under sections 293-308 of the Criminal Code 2018. The report states that the recommendations made by the task force to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology lack detailed analysis and fail to establish the “nexus” between national and international laws.
