KALIKOT, July 23: Nepal Army (NA) has cleared obstructions along the Karnali Highway caused by landslides at Kalikot district on Thursday night.
This has allowed transportation to resume, which had remained halted since the past four days.
Karnali Highway blocked since past two days
The road divisional office had first attempted to clear the debris piled up by landslides using dozers, but to no avail.
Then, with the initiation from District Administration Office (DAO), Kalikot, NA took the responsibility to reopen the road section under the leadership of Colonel Indra Bir Gurung, chief of Ransur Battalion.
The battalion used explosives to clear the debris and finished the work late on Thursday.
Landslides triggered by incessant rainfall had blocked about 20 meters of the road section in Kalikot locally known as 'S mode'.
During the obstruction in the highway, many passengers to and from Kathmandu, Nepalgunj, Surkhet, Kalikot, Jumla and Mugu had remained stranded. Stranded buses and other vehicles finally headed to their destinations after the obstructions were cleared.
“The works done by NA is really praiseworthy. Commuters would have suffered a lot more had not the NA cleared the debris,” said Daman Shahi, a leader of Nepali Congress.
