Around 300 local authorities, including KMC, owe over Rs 6 billion in unpaid electricity tariffs

KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has released a list of local authorities that have electricity tariff dues. The NEA has urged around 300 of the local governments to settle their unpaid street light electricity tariffs. There are a total of 753 local governments across the country.

KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has released a list of local authorities that have electricity tariff dues. The NEA has urged around 300 of the local governments to settle their unpaid street light electricity tariffs. There are a total of 753 local governments across the country.


The NEA has issued an official notice, maintaining that the unpaid tariffs should be cleared within 45 days. The NEA has also warned that if the authorities fail to pay the dues within the specified time, action will be taken against those local authorities.

Among the local authorities listed includes Kathmandu, Pokhara, Birgunj, Lalitpur, Bharatpur, and Biratnagar metropolitan cities. Similarly, Dharan, Tulsipur sub-metropolitan and other cities and rural municipalities have also not paid their dues. As per the NEA, the total amount of unpaid dues across these local authorities exceeds Rs 6 billion.


Additionally, the NEA has emphasized the requirement for local authorities to obtain permission before installing street lights independently, warning that illegally placed street lights will be removed.
