Changing the clothing scene in Nepal

In conversation with My City, renowned Fashion Designer, Manish Rai debunked some myths related to styling:

When a model donned in a perfect designer dress walks on a ramp with confidence and attitude, it won’t take time for a fashion enthusiast to drop their jaw and stuck them from head to toe. That’s the power of fashion designing. In Nepal fashion designing is still in a nascent stage and abundant designers are working actively with a growing trend in wearing designer dress to expand this rising industry.


These designers have drastically changed clothing and fashion sense of the country. The current demand of Nepali designer clothes is not limited only to Nepal .It is gradually including foreign clients and the Nepali designers are well recognized overseas too. Speaking about this change, leading fashion designer of the country, Manish Rai informed that Nepali fashion trend is changing gradually and people have started using designer dresses. “Change in the way of celebrating a wedding ceremony has broadened fashion industry of the country. People have started going after designer saris, gowns, and lehengas for every ceremonies, like pre and post wedding ceremonies.”

“Couples have also started choosing international tourism destination to celebrate special occasions, and we are asked to designed dress taking into consideration the destination‘s climate,” he added.


Not just bride even grooms have started using designers dress in Nepal. Groom’s dress is mainly categorize in two types: traditional and classic. They both include plain and embroidery dresses like daura suruwal, tuxedos, and sherwani. Though fashion industry is growing rapidly, many people believe that this new trend has led to social deformity by influencing Nepali traditional dresses in the western way. However, designers claim that they always try to maintain traditional authenticity in dresses. Speaking about this Rai said “I believe that main wedding dress should have a traditional touch, so I always try to give traditional finish, even in western dresses, which in turn makes my clients happier.”
