BEIJING, March 3: The opening meeting of the second session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, was held Sunday afternoon in Beijing, media reports said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, and other Chinese leaders, attended the opening meeting at the Great Hall of the People in the Chinese Capital.

On the occasion, Wang Yang, the chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC and the vice prime minister of China, delivered a report on the work of the CPPCC National Committee's Standing Committee, media reports said.

Wang reviewed the committee's work, highlighting the efforts made in strengthening and improving CPPCC work, media reports said quoting the state-owned China Global Television Network.

In 2018, the CPPCC conducted consultations focused on the central tasks of fighting the three critical battles against potential risk, poverty, and pollution, and on promoting high-quality development; Wang was quoted by the CGTN as saying.

The CPPCC also actively worked to develop friendly ties with other countries, the report said.

"We told China's stories in an engaging way, stories about CPC governance of China, about the hard-working Chinese people in the new era... and the CPPCC," Wang said.

Outlining the major tasks for 2019, Wang said that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and a critical year in completing the first Centenary Goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects by 2020, according to media reports.

"Wang said it is important to focus attention on achieving the goal and to fulfill its role as a body dedicated to consultation. And the CPPCC should also focus on hotspot and difficult issues, promptly identify potential risk and dangers, and proactively report on social conditions and popular sentiment," the CGTN reported.

Wang also stressed that the orientation and mission of the CPPCC in the new era is "to make itself a well-developed, clearly defined institution and play its consultation role more effectively."

Political advisers also heard and deliberated on a report on how the Standing Committee has handled proposals from CPPCC National Committee members since the previous session.

The second session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee is set to conclude on the morning of March 13.
