KATHMANDU, Nov 14: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed a bribery case on Tuesday against Surendra Thapa, joint attorney at Kaski High Court Government Attorney's Office, who was arrested by the anti-graft body on October 11 on the charge of taking bribe.
The constitutional anti-graft body has sought up to one year jail for him as per Section 3(1) and 3(1)(D) of the Corruption Prevention Act, 2002, accusing him of receiving Rs 500,000 in bribe promising a client of preventing an appeal at the Supreme Court in relation to a fraud case.

The anti-graft body had arrested Thapa while taking the bribe. This is the first time a high-ranking government attorney is being prosecuted in a bribery case.
The arrest was carried out as part of the anti-graft body's crackdown on corruption in various government bodies. On October 11, the CIAA had taken Thapa into custody for further investigation.
Thapa is said to have asked for the bribe from a Kapilvastu local to settle the fraud case involving the latter's son.
