The man, who was also suffering liver and stomach related complications for the past several years, was admitted to United Mission Hospital (UMH) in Tansen. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Monday, according to the hospital's chief administrative officer Jeevan Bhattarai. “He was referred to COVID-19 hospital in Butwal the next day.”

Bhattarai said the patient was sent to Butwal as a ventilator facility was not available at UMH. “He was, however, brought back to hospital on Wednesday from Butwal. He was being treated at the isolation ward set up by Tansen Municipality.” The hospital declared him dead on Thursday morning.

The hospitals in Butwal did not admit him, citing shortage of beds for COVID-19 patients. Although he was also taken to Bhim Hospital in Bhairahawa, the family failed to admit him there too. Relatives of the deceased patient claimed that he died an untimely death due to the rejection of hospitals in Rupandehi.

With this, the death tally due to COVID-19 has climbed to three in Palpa, one of twelve districts of Province 5. Earlier, a 45-year-old male from Purba Khola Rural Municipality-1 and another 30-year-old female of Tansen Municipality-8, Madanpokhara were claimed by this deadly virus.

The district has so far registered 683 COVID-19 cases of which 99 are undergoing treatment at various isolation wards across the district, according to Om Prakash Panthi, information officer at the District Health Office, Palpa.
