KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Even as financial and cyber crime rates have been rapidly increasing in the recent years, the number of heinous and organized crimes have been declining, resulting in the lowest growth rates in the last 10 years, according to Nepal Police.
In the last fiscal year, the crime rate increased by only 1.74 percent, which is the lowest in the last decade, said Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Upendra Kanta Aryal.

Addressing a ceremony to mark the 61st Police Day organized at Police Headquarters on Thursday, IGP Aryal said, “The crime rates were soaring in the first five years of the last decade but with our common efforts to fight crimes amidst difficult situations, we were able to lower the rate.”
Nepal Police informed that crimes such as murder, attempt to murder, rape, smuggling of arms and narcotics, hostage taking, robbery, human trafficking and rape registered during the period was lower than the number of similar crimes in the preceding fiscal year.
“But unfortunately we have not been able to perform well in the traffic management as we lack adequate support from other related institutions,” IGP Aryal stressed. During the program, the top cop also assured to eradicate all traditional training manual by upgrading the system and institution in the next three years.
During the program to mark the Police Day, Nepal Police honored the best performers, paid tribute to those police personnel who achieved martyrdom while on duty and also felicitated the kin of the martyrs.
Felicitating the families of police constables late Aman Gajmer and Rajendra Budha Magar, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimlendra Nidhi assured to support the dependent families with assistance in education, health and employment. He asked the respective authorities to provide the ministry with the detailed report of possible areas of assistance to the families of those personnel who lost their lives for the sake of the country.
Meanwhile, Rosi Aryal, president of Nepal Police Wives Association, distributed Rs 21,121 to the kin of the police martyrs.
The best performers to receive award on the Police Day were SSP Dhiru Basnyat of Zonal Police Office Bheri, SSP Kamal Bahadur GT of Regional Police Office, Pokhara. Similarly, SP Shekhar Koirala, SP Prakash Adhikari, SP Arjun Chand Thakuri, SP Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, SP Rajesh Nath Bastola among others were also among the best performers.
