ITAHARI, March 6: Amid threats by Madhes-based political parties to thwart their scheduled rallies in various Tarai-Madhes districts, top leaders of the main opposition CPN-UML have urged the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) not to show negative and destructive behavior.
The top leaders made the request while addressing rallies organized in Itahari and Biratnagar on Sunday as part of the party’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign. They have urged the UDMF to demonstrate democratic culture in their activities.
Addressing the UML rally in Itahari, senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal vented ire against the UDMF for creating obstacles in the party’s scheduled functions in various Tarai-Madhes districts. “. Do not take away the rights of others while seeking your own rights,” said Nepal.

The campaign, according to the UML, is aimed at putting pressure on the government to hold all three tiers of election within January, 2018. Speaking on the occasion, Nepal said that the Madhesi leaders, who call themselves Messiahs of Madhes, have failed to work for the interest of Madhesi people.
Nepal also urged Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to hold three tiers of elections within the stipulate date in order to save the Maoist party as well. “Some political parties are already afraid of the popularity of the UML,” he said.
Also addressing the function, UML leader Subash Chandra Nembang said UML won’t accept decisions other than those given by the people. “We accept the democratic way out given by people. But it is wrong on the part of a few of our friends to call the UML anti-Madhes,” he said.
Meanwhile, addressing a separate function in Biratchowk, Morang district, UML Chairman K P Sharma Oli said the campaign is aimed at putting paid to the confusions created against UML in different parts of the country. “The agenda of peace, democracy, constitution implementation, nationality and prosperity have become a matter of headache for all. The UML wants to see peace and elections.” he said.
Oli argued that people are waiting for the elections as an opportunity to drive out political forces that are acting as hindrances to constitution implementation and trying to push the country towards a political quagmire.
