KATHMANDU, Dec 23: While taking strong exception to the protests spearheaded by the main opposition party CPN-UML against the constitution amendment bill, the agitating Federal alliance led by Upendra Yadav has announced to isolate the CPN-UML through various programs including street protests.

A meeting of the Federal Alliance held in Kathmandu on Thursday made the decision, alleging that the protests launched by the UML are aimed at inciting ethnic and social unrest and weakening the national unity by pushing the nation toward disintegration.

The meeting also concluded that the UML-led protest was 'regressive' and it will land the country in a never-ending civil war.

National Madhes Socialist Party General Secretary Keshav Jha said the meeting asked the UML to stop its protests in order to safeguard the historic achievement of federalism, republicanism, secularism and inclusive democracy. “The meeting also decided to expedite polarization against the UML through various forms of protest activities,” said Jha, while adding that the UML's move is gradually pushing the country toward regression.

The Federal Alliance has decided to hold 'mass interaction' in Kathmandu within a week. The alliance will then organize similar interactions in various "10 provinces including one non-territorial province" to create public opinion for decisive movement to press their demands.

Jha said they will put pressure on the government to revise the amendment bill in the spirit of the three-point agreement and expedite amendment process in parliament. “Since the issues of martyrs and withdrawal of cases against Madhesi cadres have not been addressed, we will also put pressure on the government for these,” he further said.

The UML has been launching various protest activities against the amendment bill that among other things proposes to take hill districts out of Province 5. The party has also been obstructing the House proceedings since November 30, demanding withdrawal of the amendment bill from parliament.
