KATHMANDU, May 22: The government health workers, who also work in the private sector, have shown reluctance to seek mandatory permission from the Ministry of Health (MoH) for the extra work.
The MoH through new regulations on April 14 had made it mandatory for all the government health workers including doctors to seek permission from the ministry to work in the private sector. But officials said only a small number of health workers have sought such permission.
“About 900 health workers have applied for permission to work in the private sector,” said Dr Bhola Ram Shrestha, chief of the Medical Service Division at the MoH. “Among the total applicants, the number of doctors is only about 150 while there are some 1,500 medical officers working in the government health facilities,” he added.

According to MOH sources, there are nearly 25,000 health workers and 1,500 doctors across the country. A total of 306 sixth level officers, 43 seventh level officers, 101 eighth level officers, 66 ninth level officers, 54 tenth level officers and 33 eleventh level officers have eligibly filled up forms seeking permission.
A total of 145 staffers from sixth to 11th levels have applied but without mentioning their employee codes and registration numbers issued by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), while 53 applicants have not mentioned their designations in the forms, said MoH officials.
