BIRATNAGAR, July 26: Although there have been a respite from heavy rainfalls since Saturday, water levels in various rivers in the eastern parts of the country haven't receded yet. To make matters worse, floods in many areas continue to wrought destruction.

Lives in Morang, Sunsari, Jhapa and Saptari districts have been paralyzed due to floods and landslides. Many locals have been facing problems in lack of food and proper shelter. The district chapters of Red Cross Society and the District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) have urged people to support the victims.

The fate of around 150 families of Gobargadha VDC in Saptari district who went out of contact two days ago after the Saptakoshi River inundated their village is yet to be known.

"We have not been able to send rescue teams as the village has been deluged by the overflowing Saptakoshi River from all sides," said SP Bhim Dhakal, Chief of District Police Office, Saptari.

"Gobargadha VDC gets easily submerged when the water level in the Saptakoshi River crosses 200,000 cusecs," said Sanjaya Yadav, a social activist. “I have not been to the village since one week. Neither have I been able to contact the villagers.”

SP Dhakal said he has directed Hanumannagar Area Police Office to try to establish contact with the locals in Gobargadha VDC and do the needful. “The locals have the number of the police. They can also contact them if they are in trouble,” said Dhakal.

However, in the last two days, the police have neither been able to contact them nor have they received any calls from the locals. There are around 400 households in Gobargadha VDC, which is also known as an island in Saptari district. The village lies 12 km south-east of Rajbiraj.

Likewise, 55 more houses in Itahari have been inundated due to continuous rainfall since the past few days. Flooding in the Budhikhola River has inundated 20 houses at ward-7, 19 houses at ward-8, and 15 houses at ward-9.

Similarly, some home are at the imminent risk of being swept away by the Seuti River at Baklauri-3. More than 10 homes have been damaged as landslides hit Baraha-1, forcing all the families to be shifted to Dharmashala, informed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Binod Ghimire.

Likewise, continuous rainfall in Sunsari has inundated over 300 houses.
