CHITWAN, June 28: A HIV infected couple of the district has been blessed with a healthy twin.
The couple hailing from Madi of the district gave birth to the boys at Bharatpur Hospital on June 18. Both the newly-born babies are in good health condition.
Initial tests show the HIV infection has not been transmitted from their parents. Doctors attending them said DNA tests that will be carried out 42 days after the birth can confirm if there is any infection or not.
Ram and Sita (names changed) had married for the second time some four years ago. Ram claims that HIV was transmitted from his first wife, while Sita claims the infection was transmitted from her first husband.
After being infected, both of them divorced and started working for the rights of the HIV infected.
“We meet each others during the campaign and tied nuptial knots later,” Ram said, “I knew I was infected with HIV only when I took medical test a day before leaving for foreign employment.”
Sita too had a similar story to share. She was married to a youth from Baglung who used to work in Banaras, India. Sita came to know that she was infected within one month of the marriage. Then, she divorced with the husband.
Some 71 healthy babies from HIV infected mothers have been born at Bharatpur Hospital since 2011 with the help of AIDS Healthcare Foundation-AHF Nepal and the hospital.RSS
