Joshi Memorial weightlifting from Oct 2

KATHMANDU, Sept 27: The Kathmandu District Weightlifting Association is set to organize the “Nepal’s Strongest Sunil Lal Joshi Memorial Weightlifting Tournament 2018” under the men’s and women’s junior and senior categories, from October 2. The tournament is being held in imitation of the Nepal Weightlifting Association (NWA).

KATHMANDU, Sept 27: The Kathmandu District Weightlifting Association is set to organize the “Nepal’s Strongest Sunil Lal Joshi Memorial Weightlifting Tournament 2018” under the men’s and women’s junior and senior categories, from October 2. The tournament is being held in imitation of the Nepal Weightlifting Association (NWA).  


NWA President Bijendra Bikram Shah informed that the two-day tournament will be played at Agni Banquet at Kumaripati, Lalitpur.  A total of 100 players from departmental teams Armed Police Force (APF) Club, Tribhuvan Army Club, and Nepal Police Club, besides other players from out of the Kathmandu Valley, will be fighting for 30 gold medals. 


Shah also stated that the men players will compete in eight different categories: 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg and over 105 kg. Likewise, women players will play in seven different categories: 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg and over 75 kg.

“This tournament is going to be organized with an aim of increasing the interest of players in weightlifting. This will help develop the game,” said Shah.


The tournament will be played according to the rules of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF), and the winners, runners-up and the third-placed lifters will get medals. Likewise, the players who lift the most weights in both men’s and women’s seniors categories will be rewarded with cash prizes and also with the ‘Second Strongest Women and Men 2018’ titles. 


Similarly, the best lifters under different categories will be rewarded with medals and best weightlifting trophies. The association has also announced that men’s and women’s players of senior categories who make national record will get cash prizes, and the junior players of both the categories will get trophies. 


Only U-20 players will take part in junior categories.
