JAJARKOT, August 27: A massive landslide on Friday night which hit more than two dozen houses at Thatibazaar New Road has left Khalanga Bazaar folks in fear.
Landslide prompted by torrential rainfall has affected a lot of houses including the buildings of Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and the Water Supply Sub-division Office. As a 200 meter section of the Jajarkot-Dolpa road stretch has caved in, the settlement at New Road is at risk of being swept away by landslide.
Landslide has also swept away the electric poles and cables, compelling the locals to live in the dark at night. The condition of the road is so bad that even bicycles cannot use it. As per locals, lack of proper road construction and sewerage management is one of the reasons for the landslide. The locals have urged the government to take necessary action to save the settlement.

With no public road vehicles, locals face great hardship moving from one place to another. Some of them have even started looking to migrate elsewhere.
According to Briddhi Bahadur Khatri, general secretary of Jajarkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, lack of proper sewerage and drainage has put the settlement at such risk.
The local authorities also have appealed to the government to do something for the security of the people and their property. The locals too have demanded resumption of the road construction project which was stalled due to landslide.
Meanwhiloe, some experts have blamed urbanization and lack of good management as the reason for the natural disaster. Civil society leader Keshav Jung Shah states that the carelessness of the locals and shoddy work by the construction workers have resulted in such problems.
There are various other places in Khalanga which are at risk of landslides also. According to CP Gharti, chief of the municipality, a million rupee budget is needed to mitigate the risk of landslides.
