KATHMANDU, May 9: The government has approved the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA)'s proposal to provide a lump sum of Rs 200,000 to the landless earthquake victims and those living in quake-prone settlements to buy land to relocate to safer sites.
As the cabinet approved the first amendment to the guidelines on grant assistance for earthquake victims, around 9,420 landless quake victims will not be able to build their houses in the same area and around 2,751 household of 112 vulnerable settlements will be eligible to relocate to safer places.
“The government approved our proposal to provide a lump sum of Rs 200,000 to shift the victims to safer sites,” Yam Lal Bhoosal, spokesman of NRA, told Republica. “The cabinet meeting on Friday approved the first amendment to guidelines.”

The decision covers the victims who do not have land ownership certificates, those living on government-owned land and those residing in disaster-prone settlements.
According to the NRA, the proposed amount per family in both the groups is an addition to the grant of Rs 300,000 already announced by the government for reconstruction of houses.
