KATHMANDU, June 27: The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police Friday arrested a man who had managed to evade the long arm of the law for 17 years.

The police arrested Nawaraj Shrestha aka Nawaraj Nagarkoti, who had been convicted of killing his wife by setting her on fire, from Mahalaxmi Municipality-19, Imadol, Kathmandu.

On October 25, 2005, the Appellate Court Patan had convicted Shrestha on the charge of murdering his wife Rina Shrestha and sentenced him to life with confiscation of property.

According to the CIB, Shrestha set his wife Rina on fire on December 31, 1991, who died two days after the incident while undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj.

Police investigation had found that Shrestha burnt his wife in an inebriated state.

The Kathmandu District Court had given Nawaraj clean chit stating that no evidence supported the allegations of the family of his wife Rina. But Appellate Court Patan overturned the District Court's verdict and pronounced him guilty.

After the court's verdict, Shrestha went into hiding. Later, he went to Malaysia as a migrant worker.

He returned to Nepal 10 years after the incident, got married for the second time and started living in Imadol, Lalitpur, police said.

Shrestha was sent to Dillibazaar prison on Sunday to serve his term after he was presented before the District Court, Kathmandu.
