KATHMANDU, Dec 29: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has written a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs to remove the squatters of Thapathali.

The metropolis has demanded security personnel to remove the unauthorized structures on the banks of Bagmati River in Thapathali.

Basanta Adhikari, the chief administrative officer of the metropolis, has requested the ministry to give necessary instructions and coordination to the district administration office and security agencies.

"It is not possible to proceed with the protection and beautification of the area without removing the unorganized and unauthorized structures on the banks of Bagmati," the letter states.

Last month, Kathmandu Metropolitan City took a dozer to remove the squatters of Thapathali. But the KMC failed to remove the structures due to the protests of the locals.

With the appointment of Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party  as the home minister, the metropolis has sent a letter to the ministry seeking coordination. The metropolis has maintained that it did not get security personnel from the district administration office for the removal of the structures built illegally by the landless squatters.

The squatters of Thapathali have been saying that they cannot be removed without making alternative arrangements.
