Murder convict arrested after 35 years

RAMECHHAP, Aug 18: Ramechhap Police on Friday arrested a murder convict 35 years after the court delivered a verdict against him.


Chewang Tamang, 60, of Khadadevi Rural Municipality-1 was given 10-year jail term on the charge of killing his fellow villager Hirakaji Shrestha on October 1, 1974. Following a complaint filed by the family members of the deceased nine years later, the then Central Regional Appellate Court announced a 10-year jail term for him in 1983.

However, he was successful in escaping from the hands of law. A special team of District Police Office (DPO), Ramechhap caught him from Chandrapur of Rautahat on August 13. Inspector Amarendra Bahadur Singh, chief of the DPO, informed Republica that Tamang was presented before the District Court on August 14 and the court sent him to jail based on the previous verdict.


Meanwhile, Inspector Singh informed that the case was publicized later on due to their busy schedule.
