PARBAT, June 22: Nabin Chhetri of Karkineta VDC-6 was supposed to return home after completing his final tenure of his employment contract. Fate, however, had something else in store. He died in Monday's Taliban attack leaving his wife and children behind in Kathmandu.
In May, he had visited his hometown, Karkineta VDC of Parbat district, for the last time. He has organized a special Purnima (Full Moon) puja celebration at his home. He had told his friends in the village that it would be his last visit to Afghanistan.
OFF THE BLOCKS
"In Afghanistan, one cannot be certain of his fate," Bishwa Raj Sharma, a local, recalls Nabin's words. "At that time we did not take his words seriously, but that turned out to be true."
It had been just 11 days since his return to Afghanistan from Nepal. The villagers still remember his final presence in the village. "He was very generous and kind person," said Sharma.
Nabin had served in the Armed Police Force in Nepal. He was injured during the Maoist insurgency. After his retirement, he left for Afghanistan. His father, Dambar Bahadur, had died two years ago, his 56-year old mother, Batti, is at home.
