KATHMANDU, August 18: National Consumer Forum (NCF) has asked the government to withdraw the decision to hike the price of milk on Friday.

Issuing a press release today, the NCF has requested the government to withdraw the decision to increase the price of milk saying that the decision is irrelevant as the country is reeling under natural disasters and it is a daily commodity, too.

“The government’s decision to hike the price of milk at a time when the country is reeling under landslides and floods is quite irrelevant and it should be withdrawn immediately,” the NCF said in a statement issued today.

It is found that the price level of milk has suddenly gone up giving a financial burden to the consumers.

Dairy Development Corporation, state-owned corporation, has decided to hike the price of milk by Rs 6 per liter effective from August 17.

The plan on the price hike has it that, Rs.4 goes to farmers, 84 Paisa to the Corporation and Rs.1 to the retailer but the main issue is that farmers are still not receiving Rs.40 per packet.

On the other hand, retailer that used to receive only 20 to 25 paisa is now targeted to receive Rs.1 which is directly hitting local consumers.

At the present context, our country is affected by floods and landslide and so many claiming lives of scores of people and this decision to increase the price of milk has added further woes to the consumers.

The government had hiked the price of milk last year.
