KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Nepali Congress (NC) district presidents from various 47 districts have asked party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to withdraw his unilateral decision to increase the number party’s central departments and defer the party’s 13th general convention slated for February 2021.
A meeting of the district working committee presidents close to the rival faction led by Ram Chandra Paudel held at the NC’s headquarters in Sanepa made the demand on Monday. A CWC meeting on December 28 that was boycotted by the rival faction had made the decision to bring amendments to some of the provisions of the party statute.

The meeting had decided to extend the term of the current central working committee for a year and set the date and venue of the general convention for February 19-22, 2021 in Kathmandu. The four-year term of the current CWC is expiring in mid-March 2020. The party statute allows the CWC to extend its term for a year under special circumstances.
According to districts presidents attending the meeting, all 47 district presidents present in the gathering made unanimous call to correct the decision made by the CWC on December 28. They have also maintained that the calendar of events of the 13th general convention also must be decided unanimously.
The gathering of the district committee presidents close to the rival faction will continue on Tuesday. The meeting is expected to be attended by district presidents of four more districts.
Among other things, the meeting has also demanded to convene the general convention in an atmosphere devoid of any fear and intimidation. They expressed doubt that the general convention could be held in free and fair manner as the party leadership is allegedly putting pressure tactics against the dissidents.
