KATHMANDU, Sept, 6: A meeting of the office bearers of the Nepali Congress is taking place to make an official decision on the restructuring of the local bodies on Tuesday.

In the meeting being held in Budhanilkantha, top notch leaders of both the factions of the NC are taking part, according to sources close to Deuba.

According to a leader privy to the meeting, President Deuba has called this meeting to make an official decision of the party, so as to break the deadlock seen in the restructuring of the local bodies.

Parties have been sharply divided after the Local Bodies Restructuring Commission (LBRC) directed the District Technical Committee to send a report on the number of local bodies, without exceeding 565.

The main opposition party CPN-UML has been reiterating that the number of local bodies should be as few as possible while the ruing Nepali Congress is of the opinion that the number should be at least 1,000.

The meeting of the NC is taking place at a time when the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has been piling pressure on the government to delineate the provinces prior to restricting of the local bodies.

With the major political parties divided on the number of local bodies, the work-schedule of the LBRC has been badly affected.
