KATHMANDU, May 14: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) strongly objected the Bill to Amend and Integrate Media Council Act registered by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology at the Parliament Secretariat recently.
Speaking during the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, NC Chief Whip Bal Krishna Khad accused the government of trying to curtail press freedom by drafting the drafting draconian laws.

"The government is trying to curtail the fundamental rights of the people by drafting such draconian laws despite the fact that the Article 17 (1) has guaranteed the press freedom and freedom of expression. It shows the government is against the freedom of the press," Khad added. He also urged the government to withdraw the proposed controversial law.
Talking about the proposed Human Rights Bill, the NC leader said that several provisions in the bill are aimed at curtailing the human rights and freedom.
On the occasion, NC lawmaker Pradip Giri urged the government identify its priorities in the upcoming budget. "The government should understand that high economic growth rate and equality as well as social justice cannot go together," he said.
The ruling party lawmaker Agni Sapkota stressed the need to overhaul the entire state mechanisms to curb corruption in the country.
