RAJBIRAJ, March 9: A vehicle used by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) spokesperson Mohana Ansari was vandalized in Maleth of Saptari on Thursday.
Spokesperson Ansari, who is also a member of the constitutional body, was here to monitor the state of human rights and meet victims in the aftermath of the killing of four individuals during clashes with the police.
However, irked family members of the deceased and cadres of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), vandalized her vehicle and attempted to set it on fire by pouring petrol. Locals stopped their attempt to torch the NHRC vehicle.
The vehicle with registration number Ba 7 Cha 7479 was vandalized by the younger brother of Sanjan Mehta, who was killed in the Saptari incident, while Ansari and other staffers were consoling the family members of the deceased.
Later, NHRC members were escorted to Rajbiraj, district headquarters of Saptari. While heading to the district headquarters, relatives of the deceased attempted to set the vehicle on fire by pouring it with petrol.
When the relatives tried to torch the vehicle, locals intervened and prevented any untoward incident.
Locals have been blaming the NHRC for failing to stop the security agencies from using excessive force and for firing at the locals who live just a few minutes away from the spot where the mishap took place.
UDMF cadres also set the District Land Reform Office, Rajbiraj ablaze on Thursday. Members of the front also vented their ire by vandalizing more than a dozen vehicles in the East-West Highway.
Roads wore a deserted look as the protesters did not allow any vehicles to ply in the district.
Everyday life of people is yet to return to normalcy as the fourth day of banda remained equally stressful. Banda enforcing have forced the locals to close the market, industries, schools and government offices which has thrown the normal life out of gear.
