PM directs prompt rescue and rehabilitation

KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has directed the agencies concerned to relocate the people caught in floods and landslides and to make necessary arrangements to prevent the loss of additional lives and poverty.


At least 30 people have died and nine others are missing in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains since Friday, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. 


In a statement, PM Deuba urged the administrative chiefs of the affected districts to provide all necessary assistance including food, shelter and accommodation to the survivors of the natural disasters. Deuba also separately held conversations with senior government officials, chiefs of security agencies and other officials concerned to know about the disasters.

The government has also deployed security forces including Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police to rescue and rehabilitate the people affected by the floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) has made necessary arrangements to rescue and rehabilitate the people caught in floods and landslides, according to Home Minister Janardan Sharma who defended the government's "slow and delayed response" to rescue and relocate the survivors of the floods and landslides. 


Talking to reporters on Saturday, Home Minister Sharma said that the government has deployed required Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel to rescue people stuck in the natural disasters and take them to safer locations. 


Sharma said that the government has begun works to distribute aid and relief package including food, clothes and blankets to the survivors. He said that the government has not been able to dispatch aid packages to some place due to adverse climates.
