KATHMANDU, June 27: The Election Commission (EC) has said that it can hold elections on slated date if necessary laws are formulated 120 days before the election date.
EC officials said so during the meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and others on Monday. PM Oli, Home Minister Shakti Basnet, Law Minister Agni Kharel, Chief Secretary Somlal Subedi and UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel had reached EC for discussions this morning.
Acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Ayodhi Prasad Yadav said the EC was ready to hold polls if necessary laws are readied on the slated time.
For that, a committee under former secretary Balananda Sharma Poudel to determine numbers and boundaries of village council, municipality and special, protected and autonomous region as specified in the constitution should submit its report within August 15-Spetemeber 15, according to EC.
The committee has been mandated to submit its report by February15-March 15.
Talking to journalists after the meeting, Minister Kharel said that the government will announce election date after passing needed acts from parliament and discussing will all political parties.
The government has decided to conduct all the three elections – local, provincial and federal – by mid-December 2017. The work plan has already been submitted at the Legislature-Parliament.
The cabinet has already endorsed the election work plan, according to which the local election will be held in May, provincial in April and federal election in Mid-December 2017.
