KATHMANDU, March 26: The Post Flood Recovery Program implemented in seven Tarai districts mostly affected by widespread flooding in August 2017 has been completed.
The programme aimed at addressing the immediate needs of the affected was supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the government of China. Under this programme, 31,800 affected families of seven most flood affected districts were provided with non-food item kit comprised of household basic necessities including kitchen utensils, blankets and shawls, long lasting insecticides bed nets, clean cooking stove, water filet and hygiene kits.

The implementation was completed in mid March. The project closing ceremony was held here today.
According to the Post Flood Recovery Needs Assessment carried out by the National Planning Commission, out of the 35 affected districts, 18 districts were severely affected with the records of 134 deaths including 44 women. More than 190,000 houses were destroyed or partially damaged, displacing tens of thousands of people and rendering many homeless. Household assets and food grains were damaged and the affected communities faced shortage of food, water and non-food items.
Many suffered infections from contaminated water. In the severely affected 18 districts, the floods affected a total of around 1.7 million people (866,993 male and 821,480 female).
On the occasion, Chinese Ambassador for Nepal, Ms Yu Hong, and UNDP country director Renaud Meyer exchanged documents mentioning the closing of the project.(RSS)
