DANG, Aug 26: Rapti Academy of Health Sciences (RAHS) approved the resignations of nine doctors appointed under contract basis and forwarded the resignations of other 12 doctors for further action to the Health Ministry after the doctors recently tendered their resignation en masse.

Registrar at the RAHS Ram Prasad Pyakurel said they decided to accept the resignations of the doctors as they did not return to work even after repeated requests.

All 21 doctors working at the academy had decided to resign en masse on Thursday evening following dispute with the management.

“We received the collective resignation of doctors only on Saturday. We even requested them to return to work,” he said. “But since they did not return to work, we decided to take action.”

Pyakurel said the Ministry of Health is the final authority to decide whether to accept the resignations of the 12 doctors appointed by the central government or not. The academy does not have authority to accept resignation of doctors appointed by the federal government.

Services at the hospital have been badly affected by the absence of doctors. “Although the academy has terminated the contract reached with nine doctors, 12 other doctors appointed by the federal government might return to work since we have requested them to return to work,” Pyakurel further said.

The academy had even sought clarification from them for tendering resignations. But since there was no response from them, the officials said they decided to accept their resignations. The doctors tendering resignation en masse had earlier announced that they were forced to quit their jobs due to the excesses and high handedness of the academy’s Vice Chancellor Dr Sangeeta Bhandari.

The doctors alleged that they were physically and mentally tortured by Dr Bhandari, who frequently sought clarifications from them and threatened to sack them at any time. They have also mentioned in their resignation letter that Dr Bhandari had tried to sack a few doctors alleging them of baseless accusation.

Meanwhile, a section of concerned stakeholders have demanded resignation of Vice Chancellor Bhandari to save the RAHS. They have started a movement called Save the RAHS.
