KATHMANDU, Aug 23: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that the Right to Information (RTI) will strengthen democracy in the country.

Speaking at the 9th annual function of National Information Commission on Monday, PM Dahal also said that a democratic country like Nepal should promote the RTI among the general public as it will help strengthen democracy.

He asked the concerned authorities to make available information of public interest.

“As we are facing challenges to implement the new constitution. We also have the challenge to implement the RTI. We all should work together to implement the RTI by encouraging the general public to exercise it,” he added.

Krishna Hari Baskota, chief commissioner of the commission, said the government should develop effective mechanism to make public the information of public interests. “The government bodies are working in Rana-era and Shah-era styles. It is the reason why the RTI has not been effective in the country. So, I ask the government bodies to change their working style and make it easy for public to get information,” he said.

Minister of Information and Communications Surendra Kumar Karki has proposed to deliver the RTI-related information through postal offices around the country.

“The postal systems in the country are almost being unused due to the fast growing information technology in the country. So, I have an idea to use those postal offices as the delivery agency of the information to the seekers to their address,” he said at the function organized in Kathmandu.
