NEPALGUNJ, July 26: Some six VDCs of Banke district are at a high risk of flood due to swollen Rapti River following incessant rainfall since Monday night.

Holiya, Fattepur, Gangapur, Matahiya, Kamdi, Betahani, Banakatti among other VDCs are at a high risk of inundation as the natural course of the river has been blocked by Laxmanpur dam and Kalkala embarkment constructed by India breaching international standards.

As per the record maintained by the Kusum-based Flood Recording Center, the water level in the river was 5.70 meters at 12 noon. Official at the center, Bhadra Bahadur Thapa said that the water level is rising continuously as the rainfall has not stopped yet.

Chief District Officer, Ravilal Pant told Republica Online that locals from the risk areas are being shifted to a safer place. He added that security personnel had requested the locals to move to a safer location early this morning.

“Security agencies have been kept at a high alert for a possible flood,” he said.

CDO Pant said that human casualties can be prevented as it takes some five hours for the flood to reach the risky VDCs from the Flood Recording Center, Kusum.
