There are various water recourses in Kathmandu valley but lack of proper management and preservation has raised drinking water woes in the valley. Available sources are also used for commercial propose. Jhaukhel of Bhaktpur is one of them. Various commercial water supplier companies are established in the place. They distribute water among the civilians residing all across the valley in the forms of mineral water, jar water and tank water. Meanwhile, locals of Jhaukhel are not getting proper access to drinking water.
Local resident of Jhaukhel, Prem Bahadur Baakhu Shrestha stated that though the place is a huge source of water, locals are not getting proper access to that water. He further informed that lack of proper reservation and distribution system is one of the key reasons for this chaotic situation.
Never ending women’s water woes
Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) has not been able to reserve and lay pipeline for water distribution. Hence locals have made small projects for drinking water which are not well managed. Local resident, Binita Sulu said, “Though we are residing in a place which is one of the major sources of underground water, we are not getting proper access to it. She further suggested local representatives to address the issue.
However, Shyam Dhimal, ward chairperson of Changunarayan Municipality- 3 stated that he is planning to initiate the project to solve drinking water woes in the municipality. He informed that the municipality is planning to drill boring with the special grant received from the province government. According to him the project will be started in few days only. Extracted water will be distributed to every households through pipeline.
