KATHMANDU, March 1: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Agni Prasad Sapkota on Monday drew the attention of the government regarding its decision to levy Rs 5 additional tax on petroleum products.

The House speaker made the ruling a day after a lawmaker of Samajbadi Party Nepal Sarita Giri expressed her serious concern over the recent decision of the government regarding price hike in petroleum products without having approval from the parliament. "Imposing tax is subjected to the right of the parliament; however, the government is attempting to collect tax through an illegal means. Therefore, I urge the speaker for his ruling," she said.

Responding to Giri, speaker Sapkota said that he would draw the attention of the government in that regard. As soon as she got back to her seat, Sapkota informed her that he has already issued ruling in the name of government.

Earlier, MP Giri said that the government has been deceiving the public by enforcing double taxation as Nepal Oil Corporation has already been collecting Rs 1.50 tax per litre for its infrastructure development. "Double taxation is unethical and inappropriate."

Speaking further she also warned of disrupting the house if the decision is not withdrawn.

Earlier, the government had decided to raise infrastructure development tax being levied on petroleum products by Rs 5 per litre on February 24.
