Agriculture and Water Resource Committee to elect new chair Thursday
KATHMANDU, Sept 27: Speaker Onsari Gharti has started consulting major political parties over formation of a new parliamentary committee and election to the chairs of vacant House committees. The election to pick chairman of the Agriculture and Water Resource Committee has been scheduled for Thursday.
After the main opposition CPN-UML and the ruling CPN (Maoist Center) both staked their claim to the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Speaker Gharti decided to consult the top guns of the major political parties on Wednesday.
Earlier, Maoist leader Janardan Sharma had announced to give up the committee chairmanship to the main opposition party.
“Under the power sharing arrangement, the Maoists should get the post of committee chairman,” Maoist leader Shakti Basnet said in the meeting with the Speaker on Monday.
Out of 13 parliamentary committees, the NC and the CPN-UML lead four committees each while the Maoists head two committees.
In the meeting with chief whips of the major political parties, Speaker Gharti also announced the formation of two other parliamentary committees, said Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal Chief Whip Dilnath Giri.
“Speaker informed us about the need to set up Impeachment Special Committee and Constitution Implementation Monitoring and Direction Committee within a few days as envisioned by the parliamentary regulation,” he said.
Meanwhile, the parliament secretariat has published an election schedule to elect chairman of the Agriculture and Water Resource Committee of the parliament for Thursday.
According to the election schedule, any aspirants for the post can file their candidacy between 10am and 5pm, on Wednesday.
After Gagan Thapa left the committee chairman's post after his appointment as minister in the new government, the position had remained vacant for a month.
Although the committee falls under Nepali Congress quota, the party has yet to pick a candidate for the post.
