ROLPA, Aug 11: Speaker of the parliament Onsari Gharti Magar on Thursday stated that there is no alternative to amending the constitution. Speaking at a program held by Federation of Nepalese Indigenous Nationalities Journalists (FONIJ) on the occasion of its 17th anniversary in the district headquarters Libang, Magar said except for the unchangeable clauses of the constitution all others can be amended.

“We do not have option to amending the constitution. Along with the amendment, we must implement the basics of the constitution now. Except for the clauses which cannot be amended, constitution is something that is always open for amendment. In fact, such amendment is a progress that goes on,” she said.

Magar also stressed for the need to take initiatives to win the confidence of all the major and minor parties. The parties that have boycotted the parliament need to feel that it's their constitution too. “Everyone should feel included, and initiatives must be taken for this,” said Magar.

She also confidently shared that all the major national parties are for unity when it comes to national agenda. The parties have given her firm words regarding the matter, she claimed.

Meanwhile, the Speaker also shed light on the country's diversity of language, cultures and communities. While stating that many communities were systematically discriminated against by the state in the past, she stressed for the need to correct the course, bridge the gap and create a new harmonious society where everyone could celebrate their identity. “The state should protect and promote dignity of everyone,” she said.
