'Sports to be prioritized in coming years'

KATHMANDU, July 13: Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai on Monday said that the government will allocate sufficient budget in coming years for the development of sports.

KATHMANDU, July 13: Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai on Monday said that the government will allocate sufficient budget in coming years for the development of sports.



Minister Rai's statement came during the inaugural ceremony of the three-day Sports Journalism Seminar that kicked off at the Sports Science Academy of Nepal in Satdobato, Lalitpur.



National Sports Council (NSC) is organizing  the seminar with 30 participants. Among them, 15 participants are sports journalists based in Kathmandu Valley, 10 from five development regions and five from NSC's information and communication department.  The seminar will conclude on Thursday.



Minister Rai, who inaugurated the seminar, added that the present government is serious about sports in comparison to the past governments which did not prioritize the sector.



“Although, sports sector was not in the government's priority list in the past, the scenario has change a lot and the government is positive about allocating enough budget for this sector,” he added.



NSC Vice-president Lama Tendi Sherpa shared that journalists should give priority to all kinds of sports played in the country making the sports culture rich. “Sports journalists should not only give priority only to cricket or football but to other sports as well,” said Sherpa.



Meanwhile, Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) President Mahendra Bista, who was one of the facilitators of the seminar, said that sports media should be developed along with the development of Nepali sports.



“Sports has been one of the indicators to measure the developmental aspect of nation. So, sports media should be improved along with the development of sports,” said Bista, who added that Nepali media have been giving priority to sports journalism at present.
