PARSA, April 9: A huge stockpile of corrugated zinc sheets worth millions – which the government imported from India for the quake-stricken – has remained neglected for the past two years in Birgunj.

The Salt Trading Corporation purchased Rs 260 million worth of zinc sheets from India under the government's instruction. The zinc sheets have been stored under open sky at a ground belonging to Nepal Food Corporation in Birgunj.

In 2015, the Corporation purchased 50,000 bundles or 3.2 million kilograms of sheets from India to be distributed among the quake-stricken, Birgunj Customs Office said. The zinc sheets are gradually wearing out.

Salt Trading Corporation Birgunj Chief, Amoj Lamichane, said the zinc sheets have not been sent to the districts most affected by the massive earthquake as there has not been any instructions from the Supply Ministry's Department of Commerce and Supply.

He added that the sheets were piled at the Food Corporation ground as the Salt Corporation did not have enough space. RSS
