Tara Devi Pun betters her national record, wins strongest woman title

KATHMANDU, April 13: The departmental team Nepal Police Club’s Tara Devi Pun has bettered her own national record in 75 kg weight category in the first Inter-club National Weightlifting Tournament on Thursday. She improved her record in snatch, clean and jerk and total categories.

KATHMANDU, April 13: The departmental team Nepal Police Club’s Tara Devi Pun has bettered her own national record in 75 kg weight category in the first Inter-club National Weightlifting Tournament on Thursday. She improved her record in snatch, clean and jerk and total categories.


Pun set a new record by lifting 68 kg in snatch, 96 kg in clean and jerk and 164 kg in total. Earlier, Pun had set a national record in the first Shalimar Open Weightlifting Championship in 2014 by lifting 67 kg in snatch, 95 kg in clean and jerk and 162 kg in total.


In the same category, the other departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club’s Usha Khadka won the silver medal lifting a total of 139 kg, while Army’s Man Kumari Kumal won bronze lifting 130 kg in total. Likewise, in junior’s category, Jayanti Shrestha of Lakhe Physical Fitness won gold lifting 90 kg.

Similarly, in men’s over 105 kg weight category, Army’s Pukar Gurung improved his own national record by lifting 127 kg in snatch. His previous record was of 126 kg which was set in the third FAJR Cup Invitational Weightlifting Championship last year. 


Gurung also won gold medal in clean and jerk lifting 276 kg in 140 kg weight category. Bhrikuti Tole-Sudhar Yuva Club’s Rajeev Maharjan won silver lifting 208 kg in total, while Dip Jyoti Club’s Subhash Upadhyaya claimed bronze lifting 197 kg in total. 


Similarly, in women’s 63 kg weight category, Army’s Manita Shrestha claimed gold lifting 136 kg and Sharada Chaudhary won silver lifting 130 kg in total. Likewise, in women’s senior 69 kg category, Police’s Raj Laxmi Thapa won gold lifting 150 kg, while Janaki Budha got silver lifting 126 kg. Also, in junior category, Chitwan’s Puja Kumar secured the gold medal lifting 70 kg. 

In women’s 90 kg weight category, Police’s Laxmi Ban won the gold medal lifting 149 kg in total, while Dhangadhi Youth Club’s Jyoti Chaudhary claimed silver lifting 100 kg. In junior of the same weight group category, Nepal Byayam Mandir’s Bidhya Rai won gold lifting 80 kg. 


Similarly, in men’s senior 69 kg weight category, Olympian and gold medalist Army’s Kamal Bahadur Adhikari won gold medal lifting 257 kg, while the other departmental team Armed Police Force’s Mahesh Chaudhary won silver lifting 199 kg and Army’s Jeevan Tamang won bronze lifting 172 kg. In junior category, Fitness and Order’s Prakash KC won gold lifting 225 kg, while Birgunj United’s Niraj Gupta won silver lifting 115 kg. 


In 77 kg weight category, Police’s Bikash Thapa won gold medal lifting 247 kg, while Police’s Om Prakash Baishya won silver lifting 219 kg and Yagya Bahadur Saru won bronze lifting 213 kg. In junior of the same category, Fitness and Order’s Suraj Baishya won gold lifting 176 kg.

Likewise, in men’s 85 kg weight category, Army’s Surendra Shrestha lifted 226 kg to win the gold medal, Army’s Dinesh Karki won silver lifting 203 kg and Armed Police’s Tilak Thapa won bronze lifting 180 kg. In junior category and Dip Jyoti Club’s Bishal Singh Bista lifted 217 kg to win gold. 

Also, in men’s 94 kg weight category, Police’s Gagan Chand won the gold medal lifting 221 kg, Armed Police’s Sujan BK won silver lifting 167 kg and Arbind Gupta of Om Fitness won bronze lifting 160 kg. In junior weight category, The Pemba Club’s Jaydip Koju won gold lifting 184 kg, while Om Fitness’ Sadhab Amin Siddique won gold lifting 160 kg. 


Police’s Pun and Army’s Pukar Gurung were declared the strongest woman and the strongest man of the two-day tournament. Likewise, Om Fitness’ Sanju Chaudhary became the best lifter in junior’s category. Also, Army’s Kamal Bahadur Adhikati won the best lifter in senior men category, while Prakash KC of Om Fitness got the best lifter in junior. 


Similarly, Kharsal Youth Club’s Ram Kumar Yadav won the emerging talent award in junior men, while Karina Chaudhary of Galaxy Fitness was rewarded with the prize in junior women.
