KATHMANDU, June 21: Assistant Professor at Tribhuvan University (TU) Prem Chalaune has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court seeking justice after the government decided to withdraw the case against those who physically assaulted him.
Chalaune has approached the apex court, urging the court to direct the government to reverse its decision to drop the charges against his assailants. He has maintained that the government's action is contrary to the rule of law and aims to protect criminals.His writ petition has not yet been officially registered yet.
On October 6, 2020, Assistant Professor Chalaune, who teaches in the Sociology Department at Tribhuvan University Central Campus, was subjected to a severe attack. Following the incident, a homicide case was filed against the then-president of Nepal Students Union (NSU) TU Chapter Committee, Hari Acharya, General Secretary Yogendra Rawal, and others at the Kathmandu District Court.

Recently, the government, based on the Ministry of Law's recommendation, made the decision to withdraw the cases against Chalaune's assailants. The cabinet's decision was submitted to the Kathmandu District Court through the District Government Attorney Office.
Accordingly, the judge refused to hear the case when it was presented on Wednesday and ordered that the hearing be scheduled for the following day.
Assistant Professor Chalaune has requested an interim order to halt the proceedings related to the application submitted by the District Government Attorney Office to the Kathmandu District Court, stating that it would be meaninging if the withdrawal decision is not revoked immediately.
In the writ petition, Chalaune has argued that the government should not protect the accused individuals based on political influence, especially considering the severity of the attack that occurred within the university premises. Assistant Professor Chalaune has demanded a halt to all processes involving the withdrawal of the case in his writ petition.
