KATHMANDU, April 9: United Democratic Madhesi Front(UDMF) has indicated that it would accept the new constitution amendment proposal floated by Prime Minister Puspa Kamal Dahal.

UDMF leaders said that they would come on board the local polls slated for May 14 if the new amendment bill proposed by PM Dahal were passed by the legislature parliament.

PM Dahal has assured us that he would get the new constitution amendment proposal endorsed by the cabinet, said Sarbendranath Shukla, vice-chairman of Terai Madhesh Democratic Party(TMDP).

“PM Dahal has apprised us of the proposed bill informally", said TMDP vice-chairman Shukla. He added that they would participate in the local polls if the new bill was registered and endorsed at the legislature parliament as he has assured.

He also said that it would be meaningless if the bill to be registered at the parliament was not endorsed.

According to the draft of the proposed constitution amendment bill, eight articles of the constitution shall be amended. In addition, a permanent and inclusive commission shall be formed  to address the thorny issues surrounding delineation of provincial boundaries.

The proposed bill aims at addressing the demand of the UDMF for the amendment of the article 274 of the constitution.

As per the article 274, making changes in the existing boundaries of provinces presupposes the approval of  all the provinces. If the proposed bill was endorsed, there would be a need for the approval of only concerned provinces.

It includes all the issues covered by the previous constitution amendment bill except the delineation of provincial boundaries
